Mount Washington, New Hampshire

MOUNT WASHINGTON AUTO ROAD
We arrived to Mount Washington bright and early, ready to tackle the Auto road !! Even before the gates opened. After assuring "Fango" the 8 mile ride to the top would be cake, I hoped he did not see the big warning sign posted to our right as we sat there on our bikes. Sure enough, he spotted it and climbed off the bike and sauntered over to the sign, reading it carefully and then looking at me. But he kept his calm.

The ride up was fantastic and the weather conditions were favorable.

Almost there as the Observatory comes into view. The transition of your surroundings as you climb to the top is pretty interesting to observe. You start out in lush forest and about halfway up things start getting scraggly and turn to scrub. By the time you reach the top, it seems you are on the surface of the moon. Pretty much devoid of life and rock strewn accurately sum up the description. I guess the extreme weather conditions and wind of this location creates this atmosphere. Most of the rock has a sparkly appearance.

See the ST in the bottom right corner of the photo. We were fortunate to be the first group to the top before the area became very busy later.
